Today, we throwback to 1975 to look at an incredibly effective diet for fat lossโ€ฆ

So effective that all patients enrolled into the dieting programme (106 in total) lost at least 45kg of weight, where the average weight loss being 63.9kg and the maximum loss being 137kg!

Initially developed by Kempner in 1940 for the treatment of cardiovascular disease and diabetes, it was later adjusted for the treatment of massive obesity.

First of all, for all those thinking that carbs are bad and these specific foods in isolation regardless of anything else causes fat gain โ€“ lol.

In this study, 43 patients went from being massively obese to normal weightโ€ฆ

The diet started off with patients consuming 400-800kcal per day, of which 95% were carbohydrates in the form of rice and fruit.

Therefore, the first phase was a low calorie, low salt, low protein, low fat and free from cholesterol diet. Approx. 1 month later, they would introduce some veggies, lean meats and a multivitamin supplement which still had them eating under 1,000kcal per day.

In addition to this, the patients were told to exercise daily to a point of โ€˜maximum toleranceโ€™, they visited the โ€˜rice houseโ€™ daily for weigh ins and medical screening and were held accountable by the physicians and their peers.

When we look at the numbers, males on average started at 160kg and dropped to 91kg (261 days), where females started at 130kg on average and dropped to 71kg (334 days).

In addition to this, many health markers such as blood pressure, triglyceride levels, fasting glucose and uric acids levels improved, whilst their heart size decreased.

So, should you do this diet? No, absolutely not โ€“ no chance.

As the authors write โ€˜We do not recommend application of drastic dietary therapy and weight loss for any patient without appropriate medical supervision.

This programme does however tell us that a calorie deficit is an absolute must for fat loss and that carbohydrates when consumed with your calorie goal will not cause you to gain fat.

p.s. pasta and potatoes are fine tooโ€ฆ
